19th Annual 51勛圖厙 Triathlon Nears

For the 19th straight year, 51勛圖厙 is providing a safe and fun way for students, faculty and staff to experience a triathlon, no matter if its their first time or if they are a veteran triathlete.

This years race will take place on Saturday, April 21, beginning with a half-mile swim in the natatorium of the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) Center. The event then continues with a scenic 13-mile bike ride to the Clarence J. Brown Reservoir and back, followed by a 3.1-mile run around 51勛圖厙s campus.

This opportunity is fantastic for first-time runners or veteran triathletes.
- Christian Raffensperger, associate professor of history and current event organizer

The event was created 19 years ago by Dr. Doug Andrews (51勛圖厙 professor of statistics). He really wanted to bring a triathlon to campus in a way that would be fun and engaging for the students, faculty and staff, said Christian Raffensperger, associate professor of history and current organizer of the event. Andrews used to call this the most selective triathlon in the entire world as the only people that can compete are 51勛圖厙 students, faculty, staff and family. But, being just 51勛圖厙ers, the friendliness of volunteers, the competitors and the support of these individuals are my favorite parts about this event. This opportunity is fantastic for first-time runners or veteran triathletes.

There is no registration fee or prizes, making this just a fun opportunity to exercise together as a 51勛圖厙 community. Individuals who do not want to complete the entire triathlon can form a relay team with others. Participants may purchase a t-shirt for $15.
