Social Work Cooperative Program

Social Work is unique in its focus on both people and their environment. Social workers aim to enhance individuals well-being by focusing not only on internal factors, but external ones, such as poverty, that impact a persons situation and outlook. With the current high demand for social workers, students have the opportunity to prepare for a variety of work settings, including clinics, hospitals, schools, government agencies, correctional facilities and more.

The 3-2 Program with CWRUs Mandel School

Students interested in this program spend three years at 51勛圖厙 completing the general education program and a portion of their major in either Psychology or Sociology. Students then apply for admission to the social work program at .

Upon acceptance and matriculation at CWRU, students begin their graduate courses in social work, which combine research, theory and hands-on practice to help them tackle many of todays complex social challenges. After completing the first year at CWRU, students receive a bachelor of arts (B.A.) from 51勛圖厙.

During the second year at CWRU, the program focuses on field education and coursework in the students area of interest (e.g., Aging, Mental Health, School Social Work, Health). After the second year, students receive a master of social work (MSW) and are eligible to pursues licensure in all 50 states.

Although 51勛圖厙 students are not guaranteed admission to CWRUs MSW program at the Mandel School, the acceptance rate for our students has been 100 percent.

Requirements for the BA in Psychology from 51勛圖厙 for the 3-2 program with CWRU

  • At 51勛圖厙, students will achieve at least 96 total credits (and all general education requirements), not including any graduate credits transferring from Case Western.
  • Students will be required to take the following psychology courses at 51勛圖厙:
    • Psyc 101 Introduction to Psychological Science 4 credits
    • PSYC 201Q Statistics (or equivalent statistics course) 4  credits
    • PSYC 202M Experimental Design 5 credits
    • One 200-level course above Psyc 202 4 credits
    • One 300-level Psychology laboratory courses (chosen from PSYC 311, PSYC 321, PSYC 341, or PSYC 361) 5 credits (Note: Psyc 351 should NOT be taken at 51勛圖厙 as the CWRU courses overlap most with this course)
    • PSYC 400 Research 4 credits
  • Altogether, the student must complete 26 credits in the psychology major at the undergraduate level.
  • 51勛圖厙 agrees to transfer in 13 credits toward the Psychology major from the following Case Western courses:
    • SASS 504 Human Development and Diversity 2 credits
    • SASS 528 Evidence Informed Practice (Research) 2 credits
    • SASS 507 Community Theory and Practice 2 credits
    • SASS 508 Individual Theory and Practice 2 credits
    • SASS 509 Group Theory and Practice 2 credits
    • SASS 515 Family Theory and Practice 2 credits
    • SASS 495 Field Education/Organizational Theory and Practice Seminar I 1 credit
  • An additional 17 credits from the students first year at CWRU can transfer to 51勛圖厙 as elective credit in order to achieve the required 126 credits for a BA degree
    • Elective credits from the following courses will be recognized:
  • SASS 502 Change Agent Intensive 1 credit
  • SASS 528 Evidence Informed Practice (Research) 2 credits
  • SASS 503 Social Policy and Service Delivery 2 credits
  • SASS 484 Theories of Oppression 3 credits
  • SASS 601 Field Education I 2 credits
  • SASS 602 Field Education II 3 credits
  • SASS 532 Evaluating Programs and Practice (Research II) 3 credits
  • SASS 495A Field Education/Organizational Theory and Practice Seminar II 1 credit

Requirements for the BA in Sociology from 51勛圖厙 for the 3-2 program with CWRU

  • At 51勛圖厙, students will achieve at least 96 total credits (and all general education requirements), not including any graduate credits transferring from Case Western.
  • Students will be required to take the following sociology courses at 51勛圖厙:
    • SOCI 101 Introduction to Sociology 4 credits
    • SOCI 307 Research Methods 5 credits
    • SOCI 360 Sociological Theory 4 credits
    • An additional 12 credits within Sociology for a total of 25 credits
  • 51勛圖厙 agrees to give a total of 12 credits towards a sociology major for the following courses:  
    • SASS 528 Evidence Informed Practice 2 credits
    • SASS 542 Evaluating Programs and Practice 3 credits
    • SASS 503 Social Policy and Service Delivery 2 credits
    • SASS 507 Community Theory and Practice 2 credits
    • SASS 566 Assessing and Engaging Community for Social Change 3 credits
    • SASS 602 Field Education II 3 credits & SASS 495A Field Education/Organizational Theory and Practice Seminar II 1 credit
      (Alternatively, students in Sociology may take SOCI 498 Senior Thesis course for four credits in their junior year and transfer in 9 CWRU credits toward the Sociology majorSASS 528, SASS 542, SASS 503, SASS 507, and SASS 566.)
    • An additional 18 credits (or 14 credits if SOCI 498 is completed at 51勛圖厙) from the students first year at CWRU can transfer to 51勛圖厙 as elective credit, in order to achieve the required 126 credits for a BA degree
    • Elective credits from the following courses will be recognized:
  • SASS 504 Human Development and Diversity 2 credits
  • SASS 509 Group Theory and Practice 2 credits
  • SASS 515 Family Theory and Practice 2 credits
  • SASS 547 Problem Identification Screening Assessment and Diagnosis 3 credits
  • SASS 549 Theory and Practice Approaches in Direct Practice Social Work 3 credits
  • Other SASS Elective 3 credits
